About Dodge County, Wisconsin Real Estate
Of Wetlands and Wisconsin Cheese

Welcome to Dodge County, Wisconsin!

Dodge County, Wisconsin lies in middle of the eastern corridor of the state and extends westward toward Madison. As of 2000, the population of Dodge County was 85,897. Its county seat is the City of Juneau, Wisconsin.

More than 10,000 years ago, small bands of people entered Dodge County on the edge of the receding glacier. As hunters and gatherers, early native Americans followed and hunted herds of large animals and gathered food stuffs. The river systems from the south were used by early inhabitants to reach the wildlife and other resources the county provided in abundance. Numerous sites within the county show evidence of the early inhabitants including stone tools, campsites and settlements, burial and effigy mounds, garden plots and paintings and carvings on rock outcrops and stones.

The first white settlers were drawn for reasons of bountiful agricultural land, with wheat, corn, oats, potatoes and apples being the primary crops. Wheat growing was later replaced with dairying. Before mass settlement and agricultural pursuits, Dodge County was covered mainly with forests, wetlands, prairie and oak savannas.

Dodge County was officially created in 1836 and named in honor of Henry Dodge, then territorial governor of Wisconsin. The Town of Victory was chosen as the County Seat, though it was later renamed the City of Juneau to honor Paul Juneau, the son of Solomon Juneau, founder of Milwaukee. In 1845, iron ore was discovered in Mayville and an iron ore works operated there for several decades until competition from mines in the Lake Superior region closed them. Sawmills and gristmills were widely distributed over Dodge County in the 1870's. In 1875, John Jossie - in true "cheesehead" fashion - came from Switzerland and developed the variety of cheese known as brick, later opening the first brick cheese factory in the United States in Watertown.

Today, Dodge County is a leading county in the production of cheese, barley, alfalfa, hay and peas for canning. Industries include the manufacture of wood products, shoes, metal products, lawn care equipment, magazines, stainless steel equipment and ice fishing equipment.

For the outdoors advocate, the Horicon Marsh is one of North America’s most important wetland habitats and one of 22 “Wetlands of International Importance” recognized in the U.S. Year-round, the marsh teems with life. Spring and fall bring massive migrations of waterfowl, with nearly 500,000 birds stopping at the marsh to feed and rest on their way to warmer climates. During the summer, many species of birds remain in the marsh to breed and raise their young. Throughout the summer, heron, egrets and other shorebirds can be seen stalking the margins of the cattails. Every corner of the marsh is home to some bird or animal. Even during the winter, when the wind howls and the landscape is blanketed in white, hawks soar over the frozen marsh and otters and muskrats swim under the ice. The Horicon Marsh’s 32,000 acres of water, woods and prairie are currently home to one of the widest arrays of plants and wildlife in all the Midwest.

During the summer, Dodge County is a lush green landscape of woodlands, wetlands and picturesque farms. Just minutes from Milwaukee, Dodge County is the perfect summer getaway. Dodge County parks provide an array of recreational possibilities to fit any group’s needs. The parks have excellent trails for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. Astico, Derge and Harnischfeger parks have excellent shore-fishing opportunities and a boat launch is available at Derge Park. Camping is available at Astico, Ledge and Derge parks. Visitors to Nitschke Mounds Park can see 40 ancient effigy mounds, large and ancient Indian burial mounds formed in the shapes of honored animals. Those looking for spectacular scenery will appreciate the unusual rock outcroppings at Ledge Park.

Another favored spot in Dodge County is the City of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Located on the shores of Beaver Dam Lake, the community provides 6,600 acres of great fishing and recreation and is home to 19 municipal parks. Lakeside parks include fishing piers, boat ramps and picnic areas as well as the Beaver Dam Family Center and Ice Arena. Beaver Dam hosts a number of great events. Taste the area’s dairy heritage at February’s Midwest Cream Cheese Competition. Sunday’s during the summer, enjoy free weekly shows by the award winning Beaverland Must-Skis water ski team, Lake Days and the Day in the Park Arts & Craft Fair in July, not to mention the Dodge County Fair in August. Other events include a Memorial Day event, Fiesta Beaver Dam, Corn Roast, Oktoberfest and a wonderful nighttime Holiday Parade in December.
