About Sun Prairie, Wisconsin Real Estate
A Refuge from the Storms

Welcome to Sun Prairie, Wisconsin!

The City of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, lies northwest of Wisconsin's capital city, Madison along Interstate 94. Sun Prairie is a charming and thriving community conveniently located in south central Wisconsin. Today the city provides an alluring blend of affordability and a high standard of living for roughly 24,000 residents. This comfortable Dane County bedroom community is popular among locals and Madison workers and academics for its wonderful park system, quality schools, its annual Corn Festival and the town's favorite pet, "Jimmy," the groundhog.

In 1837, President Martin Van Buren commissioned a party of 45 men, including Augustus Bird, to build a state capital in Madison. The group of men left Milwaukee on May 25 and traveled for days in the heavy Spring rain. On June 9, the group emerged at the edge of the south-central Wisconsin prairie and, with the sun shining, carved the words, "Sun Prairie," into a nearby tree. Charles Bird returned to the area 24 years following and become Sun Prairie's first settler.

Among Sun Prairie's jewels was the world-renowned painter, Georgia O'Keeffe. Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin in 1887, O'Keeffe is typically associated with the American southwest and particularly New Mexico where she settled late in life. A major figure in American art since the 1920s, she is chiefly known for paintings in which she synthesizes abstraction and representation in paintings of flowers, rocks, shells, animal bones and landscapes. Her paintings present crisply contoured forms that are replete with subtle tonal transitions of varying colors, and she often transformed her subject matter into powerful abstract images. O'Keeffe died in 1986 in Santa Fe. (Georgia's grandfather, Pierce O'Keeffe, was a founder of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church in Sun Prairie. The church's cemetary is the resting place for Georgia's father, uncles and paternal grandparents.)

As one of the fastest growing communities in Wisconsin, Sun Prairie is near many major attractions, including the House on the Rock, Cave of the Mounds, Old World Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Dells. Sun Prairie's park system consists of 32 parks covering 400 acres. Two nearby lakes, Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, provide many recreational opportunities, including boating, water skiing, fishing, wildlife programs, and camping.

Since the early days of European settlement, the region surrounding Sun Prairie (Dane County, Madison, etc.) has prospered from abundant fields bursting with miles of corn throughout the summer growing season. As a result, the Sun Prairie Sweet Corn Festival is synonymous with the climax of the corn harvest. Festivities abound and corn is served in big tubs, and people come from all over to grab several, salt and butter them, and enjoy corn on the cob. The festival is a charming reminder of life in rural Midwestern America.

Though Sun Prairie's roots may be rural, today it provides a haven for Madison bound visitors and outbound leaders and workers in business, government and academia who have found Sun Prairie a pleasant, quiet, comfortable refuge from the pressured activity surrounding the political and highly-charged research atmosphere at the heart of the capitol. So, even those who enjoy the hectic pace can savor the setting before settling back into the refuge of nearby Sun Prairie.
